Navigating Overwhelm: Understanding the 10 Root Causes

Feb 29, 2024 | Emotional intelligence

I believe many of us are feeling overwhelmed. I also think that when we are feeling overwhelmed it is easy to suggest that it is because we have too much to do. In our fast-paced and demanding work environments, it’s not uncommon to feel overwhelmed from time to time. As someone who has experienced various forms of overwhelm firsthand, I’ve come to recognize that there are numerous factors that can contribute to this feeling.

But, as I see myself, and as I see in my coaching clients, overwhelm may have another underlying cause or causes.

It comes in many different guises and has many different solutions. It can be good to take time to understand the cause and to plan a couple of strategies for moving forward.

Let’s explore 10 common causes of feeling overwhelm:

1. Too Much To Do: Sometimes, it’s as simple as having an overwhelming amount of tasks on our plate. Despite our best efforts at time management, the sheer volume of work can leave us feeling swamped and unsure of where to begin.

2. Challenging Roles: When our roles require constant debate, defense, or tackling complex challenges, it can easily lead to feelings of overwhelm. The pressure to perform at a high level while navigating difficult situations can take its toll.

3. New Responsibilities: Transitioning into a new role or taking on unfamiliar tasks can be overwhelming as we grapple with learning curves and adapting to new expectations and demands.

4. Idea Overload: Being bombarded with numerous ideas, projects, or initiatives can leave us feeling scattered and unable to focus. Excitement can quickly turn into overwhelm when we’re unable to prioritize and execute effectively.

5. Emotional Turmoil: Personal issues or unresolved emotions can spill over into our work lives, making it difficult to concentrate and stay productive. Ignoring these emotions only exacerbates the feeling of being overwhelmed.

6. Imposter Syndrome: Feeling inadequate or out of our depth can fuel imposter syndrome, leading us to constantly overextend ourselves in an effort to prove our worth. This perpetual striving can contribute to burnout and overwhelm.

7. Task Switching: Constantly switching between different types of work, whether creative, operational, or administrative, can disrupt our flow and leave us feeling disjointed and overwhelmed.

8. Unfinished Tasks: The presence of numerous unfinished tasks can create a sense of mental clutter and unease. Gestalt theory teaches us that unresolved issues can linger in our minds, adding to our sense of overwhelm.

9. Lack of Breaks: Failing to take regular breaks can result in mental fatigue and diminished productivity. It’s essential to step away from our work periodically to recharge and regain perspective.

10. Constant Interruptions: Working in an environment rife with interruptions can make it challenging to focus and make progress on tasks. Constant disruptions can derail our train of thought and contribute to feelings of overwhelm.

Recovery strategies to stop feeling overwhelmed

Recognising the root cause triggers is the first step toward implementing strategies to manage and mitigate overwhelm effectively. By prioritizing self-care, setting boundaries, and developing coping mechanisms, we can navigate through periods of overwhelm with greater resilience and clarity.

Remember, you’re not alone in feeling overwhelmed, and there are resources and support available to help you navigate these challenges.
